WHAT NOW GROW AND GO COMPETITION
Good on you for having a go at growing your own seeds. This pack contains your seeds for the competition, a catalogue that shows you lots of other seeds that can be grown, and this sheet to help you get started. (Helpful Hint: if you don’t want to keep the catalogue yourself – it will be a great Christmas present for your Mum, Dad, Aunty, Grandma… actually anyone!)
What you need to get started….
Seeds
Scissors
Tray or Punnet
Soil or Seed Raising Mix
Bamboo Stake or Stick
Soft material to tie plant
Label & Pen
Notebook
Now you are ready to go….
1. Fill your tray or punnet with fine soil (not lumpy) or seed raising mix – not quite to the top.
2. Read your seed packet for any important tips on how to grow your seed.
3. Open the seed packet carefully so the seeds don’t spill out! Sometimes there is a foil sachet inside – this helps keep smaller seeds all together and protects them.
4. If there is a foil sachet open this by cutting the corner with your scissors.
5. Place or scatter the seed thinly over the soil.
6. Cover with some more fine soil or seed raising mix – not too deep otherwise the seeds will struggle to grow through! Just 2-3 mm should be fine.
7. Gently pat the soil down to firm. Wash your hands with soapy water.
8. Water very carefully so you don’t wash the soil of the seeds.
9. Write on a label the name of the seed and the date (a washed ice block stick will do the trick). Push this label into the edge of the container.
10. Write in your notebook the name of the seeds and the date you have planted it. As it grows you can keep writing notes about it, maybe the date the flower opens up or how tall it is growing!
11. Put your container in a nice warm place, away from the wind. You need to keep checking it to make sure it doesn’t dry out.
12. Soon little green plants will appear and start to grow!
Making your wee plant grow into a BIG plant….
Your new plants will need light, warmth and moisture, so sunshine and water will be the two main things that make it grow.
Find a nice sunny spot on a windowsill, in a glasshouse if you have one, or in a warm possie around your garden and remember to keep checking that it doesn’t dry out and water it when necessary.
It should stay in the container until it is big enough to move to the garden. Best not to move it for about 2 weeks or until it has at least 2 sets of leaves. Seeds can be planted straight into the garden if you like.
IMPORTANT!
Sometimes seeds have fungicides on them to help protect the
plant against disease as it grows.
Please make sure you wash your hands with soapy water after touching all seeds.
